I managed to fix it, after some more experimentation.
Solution:
In acrobat, from Tools -> Preferences, select Document Repair.
Under 'Problems' on the left-hand side, choose to 'Fix all'. This will resolve the problem (for me at least).
You have to enable the Catalog Import feature by clicking on Help -> Enable features.
Also make sure that you have the latest version of Acrobat Reader 11.
If the error persists, try the following:
1) Refresh the Local Store by clicking on the Refresh button at the bottom left corner of the window.
2) Try re-installing Acrobat Reader.
3) Try resetting Adobe Acrobat's preferences.
That's it.
